As you were.

I realise I'm exceeding this NG quota of only 1 post per person per
month, but......

Hello Fran. Er, Hostelling. Right. Here's a tip. If you find yourself
in Keswick and fancy a spot of brekkie, pop along to the YH. They do
a creditable English Fried and there is no check whatsoever to ensure
that you have paid for it. Which is ok if you want to walk in off the
street and pick up a freebie. But slightly lesser good news if you have
ordered and paid for a Veg fried only to find when you turn up to
collect it that all Veg frieds are gone.

I was queued up behind two Vegans checking into Alston YH a couple of
months ago. They were trying to sort out their evening meal. The
starter was easy as it was Veg soup. Beans and baked potato was offered
as a main meal option but rejected by the V couple as they said they
got given beans everywhere and were sick of them. The Manager was new
and she had previously done conference hosting at Manchester so her
culinary skills, as she freely admitted later when dinner went a bit
pear shaped, were rusty. She was only momentarily fazed before
telling them brightly, "well, we do have some vegetables!".

The moral. People with restricted or special diets.... please let your
hostel know in advance of your requirements.

Are we really allowed as many as that?

Erk. I hope they were able to come up with something for the
unfortunate who thus found him or herself without brekkie?
You're a meat eater IIRC, so it can't have been you, I assume..

Aye. It's totally unfair, IMO, to expect places with limited
funds and limited storage, and with quite possibly limited
expertise to come up with gourmet meals at the drop of a hat that
will satisfy everyone who wants to be fed. TBH, in a hostel, I'd
expect to either take what's available - and if it's baked beans
then so be it - or use the Members' Kitchen and go self-catering.
Hostels aren't meant to be top of the range 5* hotels, and ISTM
it's rather unfair to expect them to provide 5* service at 1*
prices.

Blimey, sorry folks, that's about 4 or 5 posts from me this month
already. I must be using up someone else's allocation.
